CENTS – Cost Effective migration to FttX Networks for Tomorrow’s Services is a project that looked at how today’s access networks can be upgraded to meet the demands of tomorrow’s services in a practical, cost effective way. CENTS has studied the telecommunications access network structure in four European countries, Germany, Hungary, Cyprus and Ireland. As CENTS discovered there were many similarities, despite the geographical, population density and cultural differences. This enabled CENTS to conclude on a few general cases that were representative and covered 95% of all situations in the four countries. Because of the range that the four countries represented both in economic development and geographic terms, it is well conceivable that those cases can be considered representative on a European scale. This very much supports the approach of BReATH that once a best practice roll-out approach is found then at least from the technical point it could be adopted by other European countries.
