VisionAIR (FP5 IST-2001-34615) integrates, installs and operates four large trials in respective European cities by advancing existing infrastructure and following a full service convergence approach with respect to broadband deployment. The project implements a state of the art service delivery network enabled by next-generation networking and transmission technologies, with a scope to validate these concepts in real-world trials. Operators and Consulting companies participate in the project, to align the specialized, social interests of the municipalities with the pure business nature of the interests of the providers and operators. VisionAIR will integrate and adapt various service frameworks following a full service convergence approach so as to provide applications based on data, voice and video streams. The main objectives are: (1) to exploit existing, next generation fibre and DSL networks in four municipalities across Europe, set-up large trials and experiment with convergent, IP voice, data and video based services; (2) to deploy service delivery platforms based on existing, owned or leased access infrastructure; (3) to perform 1.5 years of extensive user trials with broadband services and experiment with service bundles deployment based on the OSGI framework; (4) to validate equipment interoperability and service interworking as well as to offer end-user privacy, data security, and quality of service in general; (5) to develop and validate the usage scenarios, carry out extensive human-centric studies of the impact of the technology with the help of independent human-aspect analysis consultants; (6) to develop & validate business models to be used as a paradigm for real service deployment and operations; (7) to contribute to standards regarding validation of service bundle deployment over convergent access network architectures. Eindhoven University of Technology (TU/e) is one of the main partners and provides the trial environment in the Netherlands together with Kenniswijk. The results of the VisionAIR project can be directly applied in BReATH and may stimulate NMS and ACC to initiate similar trials and learn from the trials conducted in VisionAIR.
